Is Location Indepdendence Right for Me?

At this stage of my life, I am not suited for the Suitcase Entrepreneur lifestyle. I do enjoy travel, but not full time.

I am most suited – at least for now – to live in another country for one to two months each year while operating my business from the road. For the rest of the year, I would maintain a “home base.”

My home base would serve as “home” for 3-5 months a year, allowing me to plan my travel for the balance of the year. In addition to international travel, I would spend 5-7 months in 2 or 3 locations within the U.S. Locations include Colorado, Tennessee and other southern U.S. states.

What makes freedom possible?

This all requires a very portable business or a great deal of freedom when working for someone else, much like what would be necessary if I was on the road year ’round. My family is so important to me that being away from them for much longer than 2-3 months at a time would not be acceptable.

Above all, creating a portable business or work life requires a change of perspective; a paradigm shift, if you will. “Deciding” is the first step. Without a decision and commitment to work hard and smart, none of this will be possible.

Location Independence

Is it right for me? Yes.

Location independence gives you the ability to make a living from anywhere. Whether you are working a job and want to take an extended vacation, or you own your own business and you want to run it from the road, the principles are the same.

The key, as Cal Newport puts it, is mastery of something rare and valuable. Whether in your own business or when working for someone else, mastering something rare and valuable leads to, among other things, autonomy.

It is autonomy that gives you the ability to pursue your own course in life. It gives you the ability to work independently, for yourself or for others, which also allows you to travel and work independently.

Location independence is freedom. Yes, that’s right for me.
